AK and AR-15 Sight Adjustment Tools vs a Pistol Sight Pusher: Which Tool Do You Need? (2026)
Last updated: October 2026 | By the AltitudeCraft Team
If you are shopping for an AK sight adjustment tool, you need a tool that clamps around the AK's round front sight tower and turns the sight post. A pistol sight pusher can't do that job, and neither can an AR-15 front sight tool. The AK, the AR-15, a rifle with a dovetail sight on the barrel, and a pistol slide each need a different tool. Buying a tool made for a different sight shape is an easy mistake, because the product names overlap.
We make one of those four tools, a pistol sight pusher. Google Search Console shows people searching "AK sight adjustment tool" and "AR sight tool" landing on our pistol sight pusher page. Over the last 28 days, "ak sight adjustment tool" earned 66 impressions at an average position of 4.9, and "ar sight tool" earned 49 at 1.4, with zero clicks. Our tool can't help with either rifle. This guide explains which tool fits which sight, so you can buy the right one first time.
Key Takeaway
There are four kinds of sight tool, and they are not interchangeable. An AK front sight tool clamps around the round front sight tower. It drifts the sight drum sideways for windage and turns the threaded post for elevation. An AR-15 front sight tool is a small wrench with four prongs for A2 and M4 posts or five prongs for A1 posts. It presses the detent so the post can rotate. A rifle dovetail pusher, such as the Williams tool, works on 3/8-inch dovetail ramps but not on dovetails cut through the barrel. A pistol sight pusher clamps the flat sides of a pistol slide and pushes a dovetailed sight across it. Tools from one group generally won't do another group's job. Start with the sight you are adjusting. Ask whether it sits on a round tower, a detented post, a barrel ramp or a flat slide, and buy the tool made for that shape.

View productWhat does an AK sight adjustment tool actually do?
An AK sight adjustment tool does two jobs on the front sight: it drifts the drum sideways for windage and turns the post up or down for elevation. On a typical AK, the front sight post screws into a round drum, and the drum sits inside a ring-shaped sight tower on the barrel. Windage means pushing the drum sideways through the tower. Elevation means turning the threaded post.
That shape is why the tool looks the way it does. Magna-Matic's AK Front Sight Tool, sold through Midwest Gun Works, uses a "full-circle clamp" with "adjustable set screws" that grips the tower. A viewing port lets you see the drum while you push it. For elevation, a separate "T-handle wrench seats onto the sight post." The listing claims a fit for "All AK-type rifles including Krinkov, Vepr, and Draco." When we checked, it was listed at $61.99.
A pistol sight pusher has nothing to grip on a round sight tower. Its jaws are made for two flat, parallel slide faces. It also has no way to turn a threaded post. That is the whole reason you need an AK-specific tool.
Which AR front sight tool do you need: an A2 front sight tool (4-prong) or A1 (5-prong)?
A2 and M4 front sight posts need a 4-prong tool, and older A1 posts need a 5-prong tool. A double-ended tool covers both. The AR-15 front sight post is held in place by a spring-loaded detent. The tool's prongs push that detent down so the post can rotate, and each click raises or lowers it.
NcSTAR's combo tool is a typical example. Its listing describes "4-prongs on one end for A2 and M4 style front sights" and "5-prongs on the other that includes A1 style front sights." It was listed at $4.99. That price gap shows how far apart these tools are. A $5 prong wrench and a $70–$86 sight pusher solve completely different problems.
How much does one click move? A widely shared M4/M16A2 zeroing write-up says: "each click is about 1/2" (actually a little more) at 50 yards" (Improved Battlesight Zero for the M4 Carbine and M16A2 Rifle). The same document reminds you that on these rifles you adjust the front sight for elevation and the rear sight for windage. On an A2-style rifle you don't need a tool for windage because the rear sight has a knob.
If your AR has a flat-top upper and an optic with no front sight post, you don't need a front sight tool at all.
AK vs AR-15 vs rifle dovetail vs pistol sight tools compared
The quickest way to choose is to match the tool to the shape of the part it grips. This table puts the four tool families side by side. Prices are the listed prices we found when we checked and will change.
| Tool | Grips | Adjusts | Works on | Will not work on | Example / listed price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AK front sight tool | Round front sight tower (full-circle clamp) | Windage (drum) + elevation (post) | AK-pattern rifles and pistols | AR-15, pistol slides | Magna-Matic Gunsmith, $61.99 |
| AR-15 front sight tool | Detent in the front sight base (4 or 5 prongs) | Elevation only | A1 (5-prong), A2/M4 (4-prong) posts | AK, dovetail sights | NcSTAR combo tool, $4.99 |
| Rifle dovetail sight pusher | 3/8" dovetail ramp on the barrel | Drifts the sight sideways | Ramp-mounted rifle sights | Dovetails cut through barrels, handgun slides | Williams Front Sight Pusher, $69.79 |
| Pistol sight pusher | Flat sides of a pistol slide | Drifts dovetail sights sideways | Flat-sided slides up to the clamp's width | AK towers, AR posts, round barrels | AltitudeCraft Sight Pusher, $85.99 |
Can a pistol sight pusher adjust AK or AR-15 sights?
No. A pistol sight pusher can't adjust AK or AR-15 sights, because it clamps flat slide sides and pushes a dovetailed sight. Neither rifle's front sight works that way. On an AR-15, the front sight adjusts by rotating a post, not by drifting it sideways, so there's nothing to push. On an AK, the windage part does move sideways, but it sits inside a round tower on the barrel. A clamp built for a flat slide has no flat faces to grip there.
Our own tool is a good example of where the limit sits. Its spec sheet gives a maximum clamp width of 1.45 in (36 mm). Its compatibility chart lists only pistols, including the Glock G17, G19, G26 and G43, the Colt and Kimber 1911, the H&K VP9 and the Walther PPS M2. The 1911 is on that chart, but it is also the pistol our customers name most often in fit-related returns, because many 1911 slides are rounded rather than flat. We don't list any rifle as compatible, and we haven't tested one. None of the 261 written return comments on our pistol sight pushers mention an AK, an AR-15 or any other rifle. That fits what you would expect: rifle owners need a different tool, so they don't buy this one.
Even among pistols, "universal" has limits. Rounded 1911 slides and angled-rail slides are the models customers name most often in our fit-related returns. Our universal sight pusher compatibility guide lists them pistol by pistol.
Do rifles with barrel dovetails need a rifle sight pusher?
Sights in a 3/8-inch dovetail ramp on a rifle barrel need a rifle dovetail pusher, and even those tools exclude dovetails cut straight into the barrel. Many lever-action and rimfire rifles have a front or rear sight in a dovetail. The dovetail may be in a ramp on the barrel or cut directly into it. Those are sideways-drift sights, like a pistol's, but the round barrel underneath changes how the tool has to hold the gun.
Williams describes its Front Sight Pusher plainly (product listing). It "works with any 3/8" dovetail ramp." It is "not for use with dovetails cut through barrels." It "will not work on handgun slides." That is the mirror image of a pistol pusher. Each tool is designed around the part it grips. If your sight sits in a cut directly in the barrel, a gunsmith is the safest route. Drifting it yourself with a brass punch risks marring the barrel.
How to tell which sight tool you need in 30 seconds
Look at what the front sight sits in, and the answer follows. Unload the firearm and confirm that the chamber is empty. Then check the sight against the list below:
- A round ring or tower around the front sight post, on a rifle with a curved magazine and a side-mounted charging handle: that is an AK front sight. Buy an AK front sight tool.
- A triangular front sight base with a post you can push down and turn: that is an AR-15 front sight. Count the notches on the post base, or buy a double-ended 4/5-prong tool.
- A sight sitting in a sideways slot on a rifle barrel or ramp: that is a rifle dovetail. Check whether it is a 3/8-inch ramp or a cut directly in the barrel before buying a rifle pusher.
- A sight in a sideways slot on a flat-sided pistol slide: that is a pistol dovetail. A pistol sight pusher is the right tool. Check the slide width and profile first.
- A pistol front sight held by a screw from inside the slide, like a Glock: that needs a thin 3/16-inch nut driver, not a pusher. Tighten it only fingertip tight. XS Sights warns that over-tightening can shear the screw head.
How to use an AK front sight tool and an AR sight tool
On both rifles, move the front sight the opposite way from where you want the shots to go. To raise your groups, the front post has to come down. To move groups right, the AK's front drum has to move left. Rear sight adjustments work the other way: you move the rear sight in the same direction you want the impact to move.
Unload the rifle and confirm the chamber is empty before you fit any tool.
AK front sight:
- Mark the drum's starting position against the tower with a fine marker so you can always return to zero.
- For windage, fit the clamp around the tower, line the push screw up with the drum through the viewing port, and turn in small amounts.
- For elevation, seat the wrench on the post and turn it in small steps, then fire a group before changing anything else.
- Change one axis at a time. Moving windage and elevation together makes it hard to tell what each change did.
AR-15 front sight:
- Match the tool to the post: 4 prongs for A2 and M4 posts, 5 prongs for A1 posts.
- Press the detent down fully with the prongs before you turn the post.
- Count clicks. By the zeroing guide's figure, each click is a little more than 1/2 inch at 50 yards.
- Make windage changes on the rear sight knob, not the front post.
Where a pistol sight pusher is the right tool
A pistol sight pusher is the right tool when the sight sits in a dovetail on a flat-sided pistol slide and you need to remove it, install it or drift it for windage. That covers most Glock rear sights and other pistols with square, flat-sided slides. Rounded 1911 slides and angled-rail slides, such as the M&P and XD/XDM, are the models our customers most often report won't fit. A pusher gives you slow, controlled movement and a scale to measure it against. With a hammer and punch, you get neither. The NRA's armorer column on Glock sight swaps puts it bluntly: "Don't go banging away on it with your non-marring brass punch!" (NRA Family).

Common mistakes when buying a sight adjustment tool
Almost every wrong purchase comes from matching the tool to the gun's name instead of to the sight's shape.
- Common mistake: buying a "universal" sight pusher for an AK or AR. "Universal" pistol pushers are universal across flat-sided pistol slides, not across firearm types. Read the compatibility list. If it shows only handguns, it is a handgun tool.
- Common mistake: buying a 5-prong AR tool for an A2 or M4 post. A2 and M4 posts take 4 prongs. A double-ended tool removes the guesswork for a few dollars.
- Common mistake: using a generic C-clamp on an AK tower. Purpose-built AK tools use a full-circle clamp with set screws (Magna-Matic calls its version "ultra-strong") because the tower is round. A clamp that slips mid-push can mar the tower or shift the drum further than you meant.
- Common mistake: assuming a rifle dovetail pusher fits any rifle. The Williams tool explicitly excludes dovetails cut through barrels. Check where your dovetail sits before you buy.
- Common mistake: adjusting the front sight for windage on an AR-15. The A2 front post only adjusts elevation. Windage is on the rear sight.
Frequently Asked Questions
What tool do I need to adjust the sights on an AK-47?
You need an AK front sight tool. It clamps around the round front sight tower and drifts the drum sideways for windage. A separate wrench turns the front post for elevation. Tools such as Magna-Matic's AK Front Sight Tool do both jobs. On most AKs, the standard rear sight sets range, not windage, so the adjustment work happens at the front sight.
Is an AR sight tool the same as a sight pusher?
No. An AR-15 front sight tool is a small 4- or 5-prong wrench that presses the post's detent so you can rotate the post for elevation. A sight pusher drifts a dovetailed sight sideways across a pistol slide. They don't overlap.
Will a universal sight pusher work on an AK or AR-15?
Not for the front sight adjustments on either rifle. Universal sight pushers clamp flat pistol slide faces. Ours opens to 1.45 in (36 mm) between flat jaws and lists only handguns as compatible. An AK front sight sits in a round tower, and an AR front post rotates rather than drifting sideways.
Do I need a 4-prong or 5-prong AR-15 front sight tool?
A2 and M4 posts need 4 prongs. Older A1 posts need 5 prongs. Double-ended tools carry both and cost only a few dollars, so most owners buy one of those.
Can I adjust a rifle dovetail sight with a pistol sight pusher?
Generally no. A rifle sight sits on a round barrel, which a pistol pusher's flat jaws can't hold square. Use a rifle dovetail pusher made for 3/8-inch ramps. If the dovetail is cut directly into the barrel, take it to a gunsmith rather than driving it out yourself.
Our verdict
Buy the tool that matches the shape of your sight, not the brand of your gun. For an AK, get a clamp-style AK front sight tool. For an AR-15, a double-ended 4/5-prong front sight tool is cheap and covers A1, A2 and M4 posts. For a rifle sight in a barrel ramp, use a rifle dovetail pusher, after checking that the dovetail isn't cut through the barrel. If you are drifting a dovetailed sight on a flat-sided pistol slide, a pistol sight pusher is the right tool. That is the only job ours is built for.
