Start Here: Do You Have a 43X or a 43X MOS?

Only the MOS version has an optic cut. Look at the top of your slide, just forward of the rear sight. If there is a rectangular milled pocket — usually filled by a cover plate from the factory — you have a 43X MOS and can mount an optic today. If the top of the slide is solid steel with no pocket, you have a standard 43X, and no red dot will bolt to it without machining first.

No MOS? Your Two Options for a Standard Glock 43X

A standard Glock 43X has no optic cut. To mount a red dot you must either have your factory slide milled — C&H Precision lists this service from $125.00 — or buy an aftermarket slide that is already cut. There is no bolt-on adapter that works without machining.

This is the single most common dead end for 43X owners, and it exists for a simple reason: the 43X shipped for about a year and a half before an optics-ready version existed. Glock announced the G43X MOS and G48 MOS on August 24, 2020, calling them "the first Slimline pistols to offer an MOS option." Every 43X built before that is a solid-top slide.

How to tell in five seconds

  • Top of the slide: MOS has a rectangular milled pocket forward of the rear sight, normally filled with a factory cover plate. Non-MOS is solid.
  • Front sight height: the MOS ships with a taller front sight so irons can co-witness through a mounted optic. Set the two pistols side by side and the difference is obvious.
  • Rear sight: on the MOS, the rear sight sits on the cover plate rather than directly in a dovetail on the slide.

Option 1 — Send your slide out for milling

A gunsmith cuts the optic pocket into your existing slide. You keep your serialized frame, your slide finish (unless you add a window), and your fitted barrel. That last row is the one people miss. On a slide this narrow and this short, there is not enough real estate to place a full-size enclosed optic wherever you like. If you want an RMRcc or an Acro, you are accepting the rearmost position, and that changes where the dot sits relative to your natural point of aim.

Option 2 — Buy a pre-cut aftermarket slide

Several makers sell complete 43X slides already cut for RMSc, RMRcc, Holosun 407K/507K, SIG Romeo Zero and similar. You pay more up front than a milling job, but your factory slide stays untouched and there is no shipping-out downtime. It also gives you a second complete slide assembly, which some owners treat as a training-versus-carry split.

Which one to pick: if you already like your pistol and just want a dot on it, mill the factory slide — it is the cheaper path and keeps the gun original in every way that matters. Buy a pre-cut slide if you cannot be without the pistol for two to three weeks, or if you want a footprint that also lets you swap between optics later.

What the Glock 43X MOS Optic Cut Actually Is

The 43X MOS uses what Glock itself calls a "non-standard MOS footprint." It directly accepts Shield RMSc-pattern optics only. The multi-plate MOS system from the Glock 19 and 17 does not transfer to it, and G19 MOS adapter plates will not fit.

This is worth stating plainly because the word "MOS" appears on both pistols and means two different things. On a Glock 19 MOS you get a set of numbered plates and a wide slide pocket that can host almost anything. On a 43X MOS you get a single fixed cut sized around one pattern.

Glock's own launch announcement is unusually direct about it: "With a non-standard MOS footprint, the Slimline MOS models require specific micro-reflex optics such as the Shield RMSc." That sentence is the root cause of most 43X mounting confusion, and it comes from the manufacturer, not from a forum.

Footprint, in one line: the Glock 43X MOS and 48 MOS use the Shield RMSc footprint — two mounting screws, two locating posts, and a narrow optic window sized for micro-reflex sights. It is not the RMR footprint, not the Docter/Noblex footprint, and not the Glock 19 MOS plate system. The practical consequence: an optic is either cut to the RMSc pattern and bolts straight on, or it is cut to some other pattern and needs a plate to translate between the two. There is no third category.

Which Red Dots Fit Glock 43X MOS Without an Adapter?

Four optics mount directly to the Glock 43X MOS with no adapter plate: the Shield RMSc, Shield SMSc, Swampfox Sentinel, and SIG Romeo Zero. All four use the Shield RMSc footprint the slide was designed around.

The Shield RMSc and SMSc are the obvious fits — the cut was designed around their pattern. The RMSc uses a polymer lens and comes in 4 MOA or 8 MOA; the SMSc swaps to a glass lens for better clarity at a higher price. The Swampfox Sentinel matches the same footprint in an aluminum housing with a 3 MOA dot, in manual-adjust or auto-adjust versions. The SIG Romeo Zero is the budget entry, with a polymer frame and a 3 or 6 MOA dot.

The honest trade-off with all four: they are thin and light, and they give up battery life, reticle options, and lens durability compared with a Holosun K-series on a plate.

When Do You Need an Adapter Plate for Glock 43X MOS?

You need a plate whenever the optic is not cut to the Shield RMSc pattern — which covers the entire Holosun K-series, the Trijicon RMR family, and full-size options like the 507C. A plate adds roughly 0.058–0.120 inches of height depending on which one you buy.

The case for a plate is not that plates are good in themselves. It is that the optics on the other side of the plate are better on the specifications that matter for a carry gun: battery life, reticle choice, and lens protection.

Where plates differ is material and thickness, and the two are linked. Thin aluminum can flex under recoil. Steel does not flex but adds weight and sits taller. Titanium is the compromise — close to steel in strength at roughly 60% of its density — which is why it turns up in the thinnest plates on the market.

Plate Materials: Titanium vs Steel vs Aluminum

Three properties decide whether a plate is any good: stiffness under recoil, thickness, and corrosion resistance. Material determines all three.

6061 aluminum is what most sub-$30 plates are made from. It is easy to machine, which is why it is cheap, and it is the least stiff of the three. On a range gun that is fine. On a carry gun that sees several hundred rounds a year plus daily holster wear, flex is what eventually shows up as a wandering zero.

Steel solves stiffness completely and is what C&H uses on the V4. The cost is height and weight — at 0.090" the plate is over half again as thick as the thinnest titanium options, and steel needs a protective finish or it will rust against a sweaty carry position.

Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) is the reason the thinnest plates exist. Its strength is comparable to steel while its density is roughly 60% of steel's, and it is naturally corrosion resistant rather than dependent on a coating. That combination is what lets a plate be machined down to 0.058" without becoming the weak link.

Honest limitations of our own plate. It is cut for the Holosun K footprint only. If you want a Trijicon RMR, an RMRcc, or a full-size Holosun 507C on your 43X MOS, this plate will not help you — buy the CHPWS V4 instead, or have the slide cut directly for that optic. How Do You Install a Red Dot on Glock 43X MOS?

Both paths take the same tools: a torque driver that reads in inch-pounds, blue thread locker, and isopropyl alcohol. Confirm the pistol is unloaded and the magazine is out before anything else.

Direct-mount optics (Shield RMSc/SMSc, Swampfox Sentinel, SIG Romeo Zero):

  1. Remove the factory cover plate from the slide.
  2. Degrease the slide pocket and the optic base with alcohol — fingerprints defeat thread locker.
  3. Apply blue thread locker (242) to the mounting screws. See our torque specs and Loctite guide for the per-optic numbers.
  4. Seat the optic in the pocket, aligning it on the locating posts rather than forcing it on the screws.
  5. Torque to the optic manufacturer's specification — typically 15 in-lb for these micro reflex sights.

Holosun K-series on an adapter plate adds one stage, and the order matters:

  1. Remove the cover plate; degrease the slide pocket, both faces of the plate, and the optic base.
  2. Thread-lock and mount the plate to the slide. Torque to 15 in-lb.
  3. Thread-lock and mount the optic to the plate using the longer screws supplied with the plate.
  4. Torque to 15–20 in-lb per Holosun's specification.
  5. Let the thread locker cure 24 hours before firing.

Holster note. Once the dot is on, you need a holster cut for it. Tier 1 Concealed, Vedder and Tulster all list optic-cut models for the 43X MOS. Order the holster for your specific optic, not just for the pistol — clearance for a 507K is not the same as clearance for an EPS Carry.

Five Mounting Mistakes That Cost You Zero

Over-tightening is the most common and the most expensive error, because stripped threads in a slide are a gunsmith repair, not a do-over.

1. Buying a "Glock MOS plate" meant for the G19/G17. The 43X MOS is a different, narrower cut — Glock's own wording is "non-standard MOS footprint." A plate that fits a 19 MOS will not fit a 43X MOS. Confirm the listing names 43X/48 specifically.

2. Skipping thread locker. Recoil will back the screws out within a few hundred rounds. Use blue (242), not red — red needs heat to break and turns a routine battery change into a project.

3. Over-torquing. These are M3-class screws going into a thin slimline slide. 15 in-lb is the working figure for most of these optics. A screwdriver and a firm hand will exceed that easily; use a torque driver.

4. Tightening the optic onto the screws instead of onto the posts. The locating posts on the slide or plate are what actually resist recoil. If the optic is not fully seated on them before you torque down, the screws carry shear load they were never meant to carry, and zero walks.

5. Not re-zeroing after a new holster breaks in. The first 50–100 draws wear the retention point in and can shift a marginally-tightened optic. Re-verify zero after the first week of carry with any new holster.

Why does plate material matter if the screws hold everything?

Because the screws are not what resists recoil — the locating posts are. A plate that flexes lets the optic move a fraction of a millimetre on every shot, and that movement is what walks your zero and eventually loosens the screws. Stiffness is why steel and Grade 5 titanium outperform 6061 aluminum here, and why titanium can be machined thinner than either without giving up rigidity.

Will my 43X MOS optic also fit a Glock 48 MOS?

Yes. Glock announced the G43X MOS and G48 MOS together in August 2020 and both use the same Slimline MOS cut, so optics and plates cross over between them. The Springfield Hellcat OSP uses a compatible RMSc-pattern cut as well, which is why several plates list all three.

How do I keep the red dot zeroed?
