Lock-N-Load Bushing Won't Lock? Diagnose Spin, Slop, and Fitment (2026)
Your die threads into the bushing fine. The bushing drops into the press. You twist — and nothing happens. It just spins, or it wobbles, or it never seated at all. Every reloader who has run a Lock-N-Load quick-change setup has hit some version of this, and the forums are full of threads with titles that are literally the symptom: "How to prevent bushing from rotating?"
The problem is that at least five mechanically distinct failures all produce the same user-facing complaint: "the bushing won't lock." Treat them as one problem and you will chase the wrong fix — adding thicker O-rings to a lug-engagement problem, or Loctiting an adapter that was never going to thread in. This guide separates them by symptom.
The 30-second answer
A Lock-N-Load die bushing locks by bayonet action, not by friction. Six locking lugs on the die bushing rotate behind six matching lugs in the press bushing, and that mechanical interlock is what carries the sizing load. The O-ring is not a clamping component — it provides a small amount of float so the die can self-center. If your bushing spins freely, the lugs are not engaging, and no amount of O-ring substitution will fix it. If your bushing will not thread into the press at all, you have a thread-standard mismatch, not a lug problem — most likely a large-frame press whose 1¼-12 die station is missing its 7/8-14 reducer sleeve. And if your press uses a quarter-turn Lee Breech Lock bushing, no Lock-N-Load part will ever fit it, because the two systems share nothing but a marketing category.
First, make sure you bought the right part: "die bushing" means two different things
This is the confusion that costs the most money, and almost nobody addresses it. In reloading, the phrase die bushing refers to two unrelated components:

They are not interchangeable, not related, and not substitutes. We see this confusion in our own return data. Comments like "Part I wanted came with bushing that has nothing to do with the part or functionality of part" and "The Dyes were not the correct size" are not defect reports. They are two different products sharing one ambiguous name.
How the Lock-N-Load system actually locks
Per Hornady's own documentation for the Lock-N-Load Classic, the system has three parts and each does exactly one job:

Hornady's wording is unambiguous: "six locking lugs on the die and press bushings will hold it securely in position," and the die itself is a "standard die with 7/8"-14 threads." Separately, the Sure-Loc lock ring sets the die's height — that is a different adjustment from the bushing's lock, and mixing the two up is a common source of "I locked it and it still moved."

Symptom 1: it spins freely
This is the most common failure and the least fixable. If the lugs are undersize, there is no overlap to engage, and the bushing rotates forever. Reloaders describe it precisely — one of our own customers wrote that the part was "more narrow than the name brand bushing and therefore simply spins in the holder," and another identified it as "the locking lugs not being tight enough."
The trap here is the O-ring. Because an O-ring is visible and cheap to swap, it is the first thing people change. It does not help, and the customer who wrote "there is at least 1/8" gap even when the bushing is installed — an O-ring is provided and the problem still exists" demonstrated why: the O-ring takes up axial float. It cannot create radial lug overlap that was never machined in.
Diagnostic test: hold the suspect bushing and a known-good one lug-face to lug-face. If the lug tips of the suspect part sit visibly inside the profile of the good one, that part will never lock in that press bushing. Stop troubleshooting and replace it.
Symptom 2: it will not thread in at all
This one gets misfiled as a defect constantly, and it is almost always a press-side issue. Most dies and most die stations are 7/8"-14. But large-frame presses — the Lee Classic Cast, Hornady Iron and Classic, RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme, Redding Big Boss among them — use a 1¼-12 die station with a removable 7/8-14 reducer sleeve threaded into it. That sleeve is what standard dies and standard conversion bushings actually thread into.
If that sleeve was removed for a large-diameter die and never reinstalled, or if it was lost, your Lock-N-Load conversion bushing has nothing to grab. It is not the wrong bushing. It is a missing sleeve. One of our customers described exactly this: "it is not compatible with my single stage press, the thread size is different so it will not screw in."
Diagnostic test: try threading a plain 7/8"-14 sizing die directly into the press station. If the die will not thread in either, the problem is the press station, not the bushing.
Symptom 3: it locks, but there is play
Some play is by design — the float that lets the die self-center. Play that changes your sizing results is not. Reloaders on Brian Enos's forums and Long Range Hunting have documented this on genuine Hornady hardware over the years, describing heat-treat issues, sleeves that chip and then develop play, and threaded adapters that crumble at the base of the locking lugs. This is worth saying plainly: lug wear is a characteristic of the Lock-N-Load interface itself, not a defect unique to any one brand of bushing.
The community fix that comes up most often is procedural rather than a part swap: thread the press bushing down until it bottoms out against the press head before you ever insert a die bushing. Users who need more report lightly snugging it with channel locks padded with leather to avoid marring. Blue thread locker on the press bushing is debated — it makes the press bushing semi-permanent, which is fine, since that part is not supposed to come out anyway.
Symptom 4: mixed bushings, mixed results
If three of four bushings in a pack lock and one does not, or your new bushings work but your older Hornady ones no longer do, you are looking at tolerance stack-up across production runs. One customer's report was blunt: "3 of the 4 in package locking system didn't work." Another found that a replacement order behaved identically to the first.
There is no adjustment for this. The practical response is to standardize: pick one source for every bushing on a given press, and keep a known-good reference bushing in the drawer purely as a gauge.
Symptom 5: you actually have a Lee Breech Lock press
Lee's Breech Lock and Hornady's Lock-N-Load are both quick-change bushing systems, they look broadly similar in photos, and they are completely incompatible. Lee uses a quarter-turn mechanism; Hornady uses the six-lug bayonet. As reloaders on The Armory Life forum put it, running a mix of both systems is a recipe for frustration — pick one and stay with it.
The good news is that conversion is straightforward in one direction: a Lock-N-Load press and die conversion bushing kit will convert a Lee Classic Cast press to accept Lock-N-Load die bushings.

We sell quick-change bushings, so we have first-party evidence most guides do not. Across our Lock-N-Load-pattern bushing SKUs, from February 2025 through August 2026, we logged 83 returns, 52 of which included a written comment. Coding those comments by root cause:

Two things are worth pulling out of that table.
First, 37% of written complaints were not about the part working. Nineteen of 52 people returned a bushing because it was not the part their press needed — a decision made before the box was opened. That fraction is almost identical to what we found analyzing returns on our OAL gauge, where 37% of returns also traced to pre-purchase information gaps rather than the tool itself. Compatibility, not quality, is the dominant failure mode in reloading accessories.
Second, be careful how you read the 52%. That is 27 of the 52 people who wrote a comment while returning an item — not 52% of units sold. Returns are self-selected: people who had a locking problem are far more likely to write about it than people whose bushings worked. The honest conclusion is narrower and still useful: when a quick-change bushing fails, lug engagement is overwhelmingly the reason. That is why the diagnostic test in Symptom 1 is the first thing to run.

When to abandon the system entirely
Quick-change bushings are not mandatory. If you load two calibers in batches and rarely swap, the interface adds a wear point for very little benefit. Reloaders who reach that conclusion typically install a plain 7/8-14 reducer bushing and thread dies directly into the press — discussions on the Shooters' Forum note that Redding, RCBS and Hornady can all supply one. You give up ten-second changeovers and get back one fewer tolerance stack between the die and the press. For a high-volume progressive loader running five calibers, that trade is bad. For a bolt-gun handloader running two, it may be the right call.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Lock-N-Load bushing spin instead of locking?
The six locking lugs are not engaging. Either the lug outside diameter is undersize, or the lugs are chipped or worn. Compare the bushing lug-face to lug-face against a known-good one; if the lug tips sit inside the good part's profile, replace it. The O-ring is not involved in locking and swapping it will not help.
Will a thicker O-ring fix a bushing that has play?

No. Lee Breech Lock uses a quarter-turn mechanism and Hornady Lock-N-Load uses a six-lug bayonet. They share no dimensions. You can convert a Lee Classic Cast press to accept Lock-N-Load bushings with a conversion kit, but the bushings themselves never cross over.
What thread do the dies themselves use?
Standard 7/8"-14, per Hornady's specification. The die bushing's internal thread accepts any standard die; the quick-change action happens on the outside of the bushing, not at the die thread.
Is a "die bushing" the same as a neck sizing bushing?
No, and this is the single most expensive mix-up in the category. A neck sizing bushing is a small hardened ring inside a sizing die that sets neck tension. A Lock-N-Load die bushing is a threaded collar that holds a die in the press. Different parts, different jobs, no overlap.
Should I use thread locker on the press bushing?
It is debated. The press bushing is meant to stay permanently installed, so blue thread locker is defensible. The more common first step is simply threading it down until it bottoms against the press head. Never apply thread locker to the die bushing itself — that part is designed to be removed constantly.
Do quick-change bushings affect accuracy?
A correctly locked bushing holds the die in the position you set, which is the point. The float from the O-ring is intended to improve concentricity by letting the die self-center. "The bushing won't lock" is not one problem. It is five, and four of them are diagnosable in under a minute with parts you already have on the bench. Run the two tests first — compare lug profiles against a known-good bushing, and try threading a plain die into the press station. Between them they separate a genuine lug-engagement defect from a missing reducer sleeve, a worn press bushing, a tolerance mismatch, or the wrong system entirely.
